About Montreal Mirabel Airport
The Montreal Mirabel Airport is about thirty-four miles northwest of the city, and opened in 1975 as the largest airport in the world and replacement for Dorval Airport. Mirabel was used for passenger service until 1997, when the government decided to return passenger service to Dorval Airport about twenty-nine miles away, which is presently named Montreal Trudeau.
Presently Mirabel Airport has two runways and is used by cargo flights, medical evacuation flights, and private aircraft of up to fifteen passengers. The Canada Border Services Agency has an office at the airport, since Montreal Mirabel is an international airport.
Bombardier Aerospace has an aircraft factory at Montreal Mirabel Airport which handles final assembly of their Regional Jet models, and the area surrounding Mirabel is a designated industrial zone. The former aircraft parking apron surrounding the Mirabel airline terminal is now used as a race track, and there are hotels in the nearby community of Laval, Quebec.
