About the Olympic Stadium
Built for the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, the Olympic Stadium is the largest stadium in Canada. Until 2004 the Olympic Stadium was used by the Montreal Expos, and is presently owned by the government of Quebec. The Olympic Stadium has the highest inclined tower in the world at 574 feet. At the base of the tower is the Montreal Biodome, an indoor nature museum built on the site of Olympics velodrome.
Montreal residents refer to the Olympic Stadium as The Big O, due to the circular stadium roof. The Montreal Metro Rapid Transit System connects the Olympic Stadium to the PIE-IX Metro station in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. PIE-IX Boulevard runs by the Montreal Olympic Stadium site.
The Olympic Stadium presently has no main tenant, and is often used for trade shows, sporting events, and concerts. The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League use the Olympic Stadium for their playoffs, while the Montreal Impact soccer team occasionally uses the stadium during the rainy spring months.
